World Cup 2026 Qualification Heats Up as Final Spots Remain Contested
As the countdown to the first 48-team FIFA World Cup intensifies,a growing number of nations have secured their place at the tournament co-hosted by the United States,Canada, and Mexico, beginning June 11 and concluding July 19. However, crucial qualifying matches are still underway to determine the final lineup.
The expanded format has already guaranteed berths for several teams, including co-hosts the US, Canada, and Mexico. Argentina, the defending champions, qualified after a 1-0 win over Brazil in November 2023. Other confirmed participants include Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela from South America; Spain, England, France, Belgium, Portugal, and Denmark from Europe; and Japan and Qatar from Asia.
Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time leading international goalscorer with 143 goals, has stated his commitment to leading his team, despite receiving a recent red card during World Cup qualifying. “I gave everything for football. I’ve been in the game for the last 25 years. I did everything,” Ronaldo said.”I have many records… I’m realy proud. So let’s enjoy the moment, live the moment.”
Lionel Messi, who captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, also hopes to defend his team’s title in North America. Tho, the eight-time Ballon d’or winner has indicated his participation will depend on his physical condition. “It’s something unusual to be able to be in a world Cup, and I would love to,” Messi told NBC News in October. “I’m going to assess that on a day-to-day basis… and see if I can really be 100 percent, if I can be useful, and then make a decision.”
