[Epoch Times July 6, 2025](Reported by Epoch Times reporter Li Jing) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently revealed to senior EU diplomats during his visit to Europe that Beijing cannot bear Russia‘s failure in the Ukrainian war and is worried that the United States will then turn its strategic focus to the CCP. This rare candid statement has attracted widespread attention from the international community.
Experts believe that Wang Yi’s speech was not a temporary misunderstanding, but a “leakage of secrets under the order”, which was the time and word carefully selected by the CCP, aiming to influence the EU’s position and consolidate the unity between China and Russia in fighting Western pressure. However, the EU’s vigilance against the CCP’s support for Russia and its tough attitude towards trade sanctions have made it difficult for China-EU relations to ease in the short term.

According to the South China Morning Post, during a four-hour meeting with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s senior representative for diplomatic and security policy, Wang Yi clearly expressed Beijing’s concern that if Russia fails, the United States will turn its entire attention to the East. This statement is in sharp contrast to the CCP’s publicly claimed neutral position.
People familiar with the matter revealed that Wang Yi tried to “teach a political class” to the new former Estonian prime minister, part of which focused on Beijing’s judgment that the United States is about to turn to the East in a comprehensive manner. It is generally believed within the EU that extending the Russian-Ukrainian conflict may be in line with Beijing’s strategic needs because it will help to continue to restrain the US’s energy on the Ukrainian issue.
The three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine is the main focus of current Sino-European relations frictions. The EU has long criticized Beijing for providing dual-use items to Russia, while the CCP has never publicly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has continued to maintain close diplomatic and economic ties with Russia.
Currently, the EU is preparing to blacklist two small Chinese banks on the grounds that they allegedly violated sanctions against Russia.
Analysis: Trump may intend to set up a situation to force the CCP to expose its true position
Senior media person Fang Wei analyzed in the program “Good Morning China” that Wang Yi’s remarks were not casually expressed, but “leaked secrets under the order”, reflecting the deep strategic considerations of the top leaders of the Communist Party of China. He believes that Wang Yi’s trip is intended to appease the EU and tries to show that the CCP’s support for Russia is not aimed at the EU, but is due to concerns about US strategic containment. At the same time, the CCP emphasized that China and Europe should jointly pursue “strategic autonomy” to counter the unipolar world order dominated by the United States.
However, the EU has fully grasped the evidence that the CCP provides dual-use materials for military and civilians to Russia and is highly vigilant about its position. US President Trump has previously stated that it may reduce military aid to Ukraine, which has caused concerns in Europe and has also intensified dissatisfaction with the CCP’s support for Russia. Fang Wei believes that this may be Trump’s intention to set up a situation, forcing the CCP to expose his true position, thereby aggravating the Sino-Europe conflict. Current affairs commentator Yokogawa further analyzed in the “Yokogawa Review” program that Wang Yi’s speech reflected the strategic intention of the top leaders of the Communist Party of China, that is, to restrain the United States by supporting Russia and to strive for a strategic buffer for the CCP to take action in the Taiwan Strait or other regions. As a senior diplomat, Wang Yi’s frank statement was carefully designed, and may be a temptation or pressure on the EU, aiming to prompt the EU to accept the CCP’s position that it is not happy to see Russia’s failure.
Comment: China and Russia may reach a “secret agreement” and the CCP supports Russia in exchange for Russia’s support for the CCP’s invasion of Taiwan
Yokogawa said that the Chinese Communist Party has long regarded the United States as its main geopolitical rival. The Russian-Ukrainian war dispersed the United States’ strategic resources in the Indo-Pacific region, which is beneficial to the CCP. Although the Chinese Foreign Ministry remains neutral on the surface, it has never condemned the Russian invasion and continues to support Russia through economic and trade exchanges and dual-use military and civilian materials.
He also mentioned that Putin’s invasion of Ukraine after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics may reach some kind of “tactic understanding” or “secret agreement” with Xi Jinping to use the Russian-Ukrainian war to restrain the United States and exchange Russia for support of the Chinese Communist Party invasion of Taiwan. However, while Xi Jinping was preparing to invade Taiwan, he discovered that the Rockets’ Force’s serious corruption thwarted his ambition to invade Taiwan.
Yokogawa believes that as long as the Russian-Ukrainian war continues to contain the United States, it will be in line with the strategic interests of the CCP. Wang Yi’s speech was intended to test the EU’s bottom line, warning that if too much pressure was put on the CCP, it might worsen China-EU relations. (Please watch the original video)
The EU’s vigilance against the CCP’s support for Russia and its tough attitude towards trade sanctions on China make Wang Yi’s pacification effect questionable. EU Senior Representative Karas clearly pointed out that the CCP’s actions in cyber attacks, unfair trade and support for Russia have damaged Europe’s security and employment, and Wang Yi’s remarks may further deepen the EU’s vigilance against the CCP. ◇
