June 30, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Explosion in Monaco’s Monte-Carlo District Injures Billionaire, Suspect Fled to France

A bomb explosion on Wednesday injured three people, including Ukrainian billionaire Vadym Yermolaiev, near a luxury hotel in Monaco. Authorities confirmed the attack involved a device detonated in a public area, with a suspect identified and pursued by law enforcement. French authorities reported the individual fled across the border into France, though no group has claimed responsibility.

The blast occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time in the Monte-Carlo district, a hub for high-profile events. Monaco’s police described the suspect’s escape as “rapid,” with French authorities noting the individual “may have crossed into France under an assumed identity.” No arrests have been made as of Thursday morning.

Yermolaiev’s Business Ties to Russian Firms Under Scrutiny

Yermolaiev, a Ukrainian national with reported stakes in Russian energy firms, has not commented on the incident. His business history includes investments in OJSC Uralkali, a Russian potash producer, though he has denied political affiliations. A Monaco police spokesperson said the investigation is “focused on determining the nature of the attack and the suspect’s potential connections to organized crime or other threats.”

Non-Life-Threatening Injuries Reported After Structural Damage

The explosion caused structural damage to a nearby building and prompted evacuations. Emergency services treated three victims, including Yermolaiev, for non-life-threatening injuries. A local resident was hospitalized with burns, while a third individual sustained minor injuries. No casualties were reported.

French Authorities Investigate Suspect’s Possible Use of False Identity

French border control agencies are increasing surveillance along the French-Monaco frontier. A statement from the French Interior Ministry highlighted the suspect’s “possible use of an assumed identity,” as investigators examine motives ranging from criminal activity to political targeting.

Businessman’s Russian Connections Draw International Attention

Yermolaiev’s ties to Russian business networks have drawn scrutiny, particularly after Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While he has not been linked to sanctions, a source close to him told Reuters, “He has always maintained a neutral stance, focusing on commercial ventures rather than political matters.”

Monaco Awaits Formal Statement as Security Measures Reviewed

Monaco’s government has not issued a formal statement on the attack, but security protocols are under review. A spokesperson for the Monaco Ministry of Interior said, “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure public safety and support the ongoing inquiry.”
