Thousands Evacuate as Hawk Fire Rages Near Reno, Nevada

August 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency for Washoe County as about 900 firefighters and state and federal crews struggle to contain the blaze, which has already destroyed at least 32 homes.

The Escalating Crisis in Washoe County

The Hawk Fire, which originated on Saturday near Peavine Mountain, continues to threaten residential corridors in the northwest Reno area. According to officials, the fire is human-caused and has exhibited volatile, shifting wind patterns that have hampered containment efforts. While the fire reached 27% containment early Monday, the FOX Forecast Center noted that wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph remain a significant challenge for crews working in the rugged terrain.

The scale of the displacement has been substantial. Early reporting indicated that nearly 90,000 residents were initially asked or ordered to leave their homes, though that figure has fluctuated as evacuation zones have been adjusted. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve issued a direct plea to the public: “If you are told to evacuate, please don’t wait. Structures have already been burned in this fire, and your life is more important than the building.”

Infrastructure and Emergency Response

The destruction is not limited to residential property; thousands of residents remain without power as utility crews evaluate the damage to local infrastructure. The Nevada National Guard has been mobilized to assist, contributing two helicopter crews and 72 security personnel to the multi-agency response. The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada has established emergency shelters to house those displaced by the Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders.

The human toll of the disaster has reached seven confirmed injuries, including four civilians and three firefighters.

The Broader Impact on Northern Nevada

This event highlights the increasing vulnerability of high-density residential areas in the American West to rapidly moving wildfire events. Route 395 has become a primary tactical objective for fire officials. The complexity of this incident often creates secondary issues for property owners, particularly regarding insurance claims and structural liability.

Property owners dealing with the aftermath of structural damage or mandatory displacement often face significant legal and financial hurdles.

Looking Ahead: Containment and Recovery

The state of emergency declared by Governor Lombardo facilitates the flow of state resources to the affected region, but the path to recovery remains steep. With the fire still active and moving through mountainous terrain, the focus remains squarely on life safety and containment. As of Monday morning, firefighters are prioritizing the protection of dense residential neighborhoods from further encroachment.
