putin Intensifies Attacks on Ukraine, Prompting New U.S.Sanctions Threat
Kyiv, Ukraine – Following a surge in Russian attacks on Ukraine, including a devastating strike on Kyiv that killed over 20 people, including four children, the United States has signaled it is indeed prepared to impose further sanctions on Russia. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated in a Fox News interview that “all possibilities remain on the table” regarding additional restrictions.
The escalation comes after a recent phone conversation between european leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, followed by a visit to the White House. According to officials, Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken actions directly contradicting previously stated intentions. Yellen indicated that new sanctions against Russia will be discussed this week.
On the night of August 28th, Russia launched nearly 600 drone and 31 missile attacks, primarily targeting Kyiv. One strike hit a multi-story residential building in the Darnitskyi district of Kyiv.
The White House responded to the attacks, stating that former President Trump expressed unhappiness with the situation, but not surprise. The latest attacks represent a meaningful intensification of Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine, raising concerns about further civilian casualties and prompting renewed calls for international pressure on Moscow.
