Trump-Xi Summit 2024: High-Stakes Beijing Meetings, Trade Tensions & Global Implications

May 14, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport on Wednesday evening to begin a multi-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit, which aims to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between the world’s two largest economies, comes as global attention remains focused on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Upon his arrival via Air Force One, President Trump was greeted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. The U.S. Delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Elon Musk, and Eric and Lara Trump. According to the White House, the President’s initial itinerary includes a welcome ceremony, a bilateral meeting with President Xi at the Great Hall of the People, and a state banquet held on Wednesday night.

Trade and technological discussions

The summit follows last-minute negotiations between U.S. And Chinese trade chiefs. While the leaders are expected to address a range of complex issues, including technology, trade, and Taiwan, the economic relationship remains a central pillar of the visit. A delegation of more than a dozen business leaders is traveling with the President, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Elon Musk.

The discussions occur as observers in Europe express hope for productive dialogue between the two nations. Although the summit is intended to frame the future of the bilateral trade relationship, the geopolitical landscape remains heavily influenced by external conflicts.

Regional conflict and energy security

The U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, now in its third month, serves as a significant backdrop to the high-stakes meeting. The conflict has created a global energy crisis, and the Strait of Hormuz—a vital chokepoint for oil trade—has become a primary concern for international stability. Analysts suggest that President Trump is expected to encourage President Xi to use China’s influence over Iran, a major buyer of Iranian oil, to push for the reopening of the Strait and an agreement on a peace deal.

Addressing the situation, President Trump stated that the United States has Iran “very much under control” and indicated that the conflict would be among the topics discussed during the summit. However, the President also noted that the current ceasefire with Iran is on “massive life support.”

The visit was originally scheduled for March but was delayed by the Trump administration to allow more time for the regional conflict to reach a resolution. The summit is proceeding as the diplomatic and military situation in the Middle East remains active.
