Trump Deploys National Guard to Chicago, Faces Legal Challenges in Portland
Washington D.C. – President donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard members to Chicago to “protect federal agents and assets,” according to White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson. This move comes as the governance continues to prioritize a crackdown on illegal immigration and faces resistance from Democratic-led cities.
Chicago is now the fifth major city with a Democratic mayor to receive a National Guard deployment order from President Trump, a measure previously considered extraordinary.Similar deployments have recently occurred in Los Angeles, washington D.C., and Memphis, despite objections from local authorities who deem them unauthorized.
Meanwhile, a federal judge temporarily blocked President Trump’s order to send 200 National Guard members to Portland, Oregon. Judge Karin Imgut ruled that local protests do not constitute a rebellion or national security threat and can be managed by standard riot control forces. The ruling is valid until October 18th, but the White House has announced plans to appeal.
The administration frames these deployments as necessary to combat what they describe as an “invasion of criminals from abroad,” making the fight against illegal immigration a central focus of Trump’s second term. He has repeatedly issued statements advocating for increased deportations.
However, Democratic leaders are pushing back against the federal intervention. Oregon Governor Tina Koteková stated, “There is no uprising, there is no threat to national security, and there is no need to have military units in our great city,” urging citizens to avoid violence and vandalism. President Trump has also threatened to send troops to New York and Baltimore.
Adding to the tensions, a shooting incident occurred in Chicago over the weekend. Federal agents were forced to open fire on an armed motorist who allegedly rammed their van and attempted to evade police. The woman, an american citizen armed with a semi-automatic weapon, was injured and transported to a hospital in satisfactory condition, according to Ministry of Internal Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin and reports from the Associated Press. No law enforcement personnel were seriously injured.
