Tajani: ‘US discussions are political, EU handles tariff negotiations’
Italian Minister of foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, stated that his upcoming mission to the United States will be primarily political, focusing on issues such as Ukraine, the middle East, and Africa. He confirmed that he would also meet with trade officials to discuss commercial matters, emphasizing that the negotiation on tariffs falls under the purview of the European Union.
Minister Tajani reiterated that trade policy and the establishment of rules governing trade between the United States and the European Union are competencies of the EU as a whole, not individual member states. He highlighted Italy’s strategy to bolster its presence in existing strong markets, including Mexico, Canada, India, Japan, Gulf countries, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Acknowledging the significant economic relationship between the United States and Europe, Tajani indicated that Italy would prioritize protecting its key sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and the automotive industry. He stressed that the United States remains an indispensable ally for Europe and Italy, and that no other country, including China, can replace this crucial partnership.
