U.S. Warns Ukraine: Reject Peace deal, face a Bleaker Future,Sources Say
KYIV,Ukraine – The United States is pressing Ukraine to accept a peace deal with Russia that reportedly involves surrendering further territory adn potentially an amnesty for war crimes, warning Kyiv that the terms will only worsen if thay reject the offer, according to sources familiar with ongoing negotiations. The push, led by U.S. envoy Mike Driscoll, has blindsided other NATO allies and sparked concern that Russia has exerted undue influence over the draft agreement.
Driscoll, a close friend of U.S. Senator JD Vance, reportedly told diplomats at a recent meeting that the U.S. is focused on “the things that matter” in the proposed deal, dismissing some aspects as “window dressing.” While he declined to confirm if the plan aligns with a previously published 28-point proposal, he defended the limited consultation with allies, stating that “the more cooks in the kitchen, the harder it is to handle.”
U.S. Chargé d’affaires in Kyiv, Julie davis, echoed the urgency, telling diplomats that Ukraine has ”little choice but to accept” the current terms or face a more unfavorable outcome. “The deal does not get better from here, it gets worse,” she reportedly said.
The proposed agreement, reportedly drafted by Trump aide Steve Witkoff and Kremlin advisor Kirill Dmitriev, has an “aggressive timeline” for acceptance, with former President Donald Trump aiming for a signature by Thanksgiving, this Thursday.Trump himself stated on Saturday that the plan was not his final offer, but he hopes the fighting will stop “one way or the other.”
The plan has raised alarm in Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledging in a video address on Friday that the country faces “one of the most arduous moments of our history,” presenting a choice between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”
A U.S. official defended the potential territorial concessions, arguing the deal “was beneficial to Ukraine.” They envisioned Trump and Zelenskyy signing a document “for peace.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated on Friday that Moscow had received a copy of the plan and believes “it can be used as the basis for a final peaceful settlement.” Driscoll is expected to travel to Russia soon to further discuss the proposal.
