EU Considers €6.6 Billion Weapons Package for Ukraine Amidst Continued Russian Attacks
Brussels – The European Union is reportedly nearing a decision to provide Ukraine with a considerable new weapons package, potentially totaling €6.6 billion, sourced from the United States. This development comes as support from the United States has stalled under president Donald Trump, who has not approved new aid packages to Ukraine since beginning his second term.
In July, President Trump indicated European allies could purchase U.S. weaponry for Ukraine independently. The proposed EU package would represent a meaningful shift, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, who stated, “The EU is considering allocating €6.6 billion to buy US weapons to Kiev,” as reported by the Kyiv Self-reliant. Shmyhal expressed confidence in continued EU support, adding,”We have received an vital signal that support for Ukraine will continue and grow stronger.”
The potential aid arrives as Russia continues its military offensive, refusing both a ceasefire and meaningful negotiations. Ukraine is currently facing ongoing aerial attacks, including missile strikes, while discussions regarding long-term security guarantees remain ongoing.
Recent events have heightened tensions, including an incident on Wednesday where Poland shot down several Russian drones that violated its airspace. This violation was widely condemned by European leaders.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the airspace intrusion as “an extremely risky precedent for europe,” warning that it was likely not accidental and emphasizing that further action depends on “the coordination and strength of the answer.” Zelenskyy offered to share relevant details with Poland regarding the incident.
EU Foreign Manager Kaja also stated the airspace violation was “the most serious European airspace violation of Russia as the war began.”
This potential weapons delivery underscores the ongoing international effort to support Ukraine as it defends against Russian aggression.
