Russia on Friday condemned what it called “excessive” U.S. military force in the Caribbean, voicing support for Venezuela amid heightened tensions following a U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) deployment. The Russian Foreign Ministry asserted the U.S. actions are destabilizing and warned against any interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs. The rebuke comes as the U.S. increases its military presence in the region, citing concerns over drug trafficking and regional security. This escalation raises the stakes in a long-running geopolitical contest between washington and Moscow over influence in Latin America, with Venezuela remaining a key focal point. The situation impacts regional stability, international law regarding sovereignty, and the potential for further escalation of military posturing.”We are concerned about the demonstration of excessive military force by the United States in the Caribbean region,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated, according to Russian state news agency TASS. “We consider such actions to be counterproductive and destabilizing.”
Russia reaffirmed its backing for Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro‘s government, emphasizing the importance of resolving political disputes through dialog and respecting Venezuela’s sovereignty. “We consistently support a peaceful settlement of internal political differences in Venezuela through inclusive national dialogue, with full respect for the principles of national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs,” Zakharova added.
The SOUTHCOM deployment, announced earlier this week, includes naval vessels, aircraft, and special operations forces. U.S. officials have stated the operation is aimed at disrupting criminal organizations and bolstering security cooperation with partner nations. However, caracas views the move as a direct threat.
This is not the first time Russia has publicly defended Venezuela against perceived U.S. pressure. Russia has provided economic and military assistance to Venezuela, including arms and loans, strengthening ties between the two countries in recent years. The current situation underscores the deepening strategic alignment between Russia and Venezuela, challenging U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere.
