Frequent nighttime Urination could Signal Kidney Issues, Expert Warns

Jakarta – Waking‍ up multiple times during the night to urinate is a common experience, but health professionals caution against dismissing it as a mere inconvenience. Frequent nighttime urination can ⁤be an early indicator of declining kidney function, potentially signaling a serious ‍health concern.

According to Dr. Inggril Situmorang, SpPD-KGH, an internal ‌medicine specialist, healthy kidneys play a crucial role ‌in regulating ‍urine concentration and establishing a normal urination rhythm, ⁢allowing for uninterrupted‍ sleep. Disruptions to ⁣this ‍process can manifest as increased nighttime trips ⁣to ⁢the bathroom. this is particularly relevant as ‍kidney disease often progresses silently, affecting millions worldwide and potentially leading to kidney failure if left unaddressed.

Dr. Inggril explained that when kidney function is compromised,a variety⁢ of symptoms can emerge. “If (the‍ kidneys) have failed,‌ it is the kidneys that regulate the rhythm of urination. It makes the urine concentration normal. It makes it easier to sleep‌ at night,” she stated during a meeting at⁤ Siloam ⁤Hospitals TB Simatupang on Tuesday, september 30,2025. “So if he starts to get disturbed, ther ⁣will be various (symptoms), it could be nighttime urination, it could be foamy urine, it could be less and ⁢less‍ urine, it could be a different color.”

However, Dr. Inggril emphasized that these ⁢signs aren’t definitive proof of kidney failure ‌and require ⁣professional medical⁤ evaluation for accurate diagnosis.Symptoms like foamy⁤ urine⁤ or reduced urine volume can stem from‌ various underlying causes.

She further noted ⁢the diverse ⁢origins of ‌kidney disease, highlighting uncontrolled diabetes as a significant contributing factor. ⁣”there are many causes of kidney disease, for example,if the cause is uncontrolled diabetes, maybe the person will urinate frequently. Not‌ just at night, but during ⁢the day and beyond,”‍ she concluded.
