Horizon MMO announced for Mobile and PC, PS5 Fans Left Out
Sony and NCSoft have revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the Horizon universe. The game is slated for release on PC and mobile platforms, sparking disappointment among PlayStation 5 owners who anticipated a console version.
Developed by NCSoft, Horizon Steel Frontiers will allow “thousands” of players too inhabit the world of Horizon as custom-created machine hunters within a region inspired by Arizona and new Mexico, known as the Deathlands. Unlike the single-player Horizon titles, players will not control Aloy, but will instead personalize their own characters within the established tribal aesthetics of the series.
Guerrilla’s Jan-Bart van Beek stated in a press release, “Horizon Steel Frontiers is a full-fledged MMORPG that NCSoft has built specifically for mobile. With Steel Frontiers, you can step into this world anywhere, anytime. Players take on the role of machine hunters, chasing opportunity… you’re sharing the frontier with thousands of other players, sometimes working together to take down machines and other times competing with rival tribes or fighting over resources, and that mix of cooperation and competition creates moments that you could never script.”
The proclamation follows the recent reveal of Ratchet & Clank: Galaxy Rangers, another PlayStation franchise adaptation focused on mobile gaming. Sony’s increased focus on mobile titles, and its protection of the Horizon IP, is highlighted by its recent legal action against developers of games perceived as copies, such as Light of Motiram.
ncsoft aims to release Horizon Steel Frontiers quickly, with pre-registration expected to open shortly after the official announcement this week. A release date has not yet been confirmed.
