Czech General Reiterates Support for Ukraine Amidst Growing International Pressure for Concessions
prague – Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka has once again voiced support for Ukraine, even as Kyiv faces escalating pressure from the United States and Russia to accept a peace plan involving significant territorial concessions. Řehka’s advocacy follows a recent fundraising event for Ukraine, where concerns were raised that his public stance was exacerbating tensions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the pressure on his country as “extraordinary,” stating Ukraine might potentially be forced to choose between territorial loss and a loss of dignity. This comes in response to a leaked American 28-point peace plan reportedly requiring Ukraine to cede occupied territories, including Crimea, limit it’s military size, and forgo NATO membership. Zelenskyy, who pledged to defend Ukraine’s independence in 2019, has rejected any solution compromising Ukrainian sovereignty, stating, “We did not betray Ukraine in 2022 and we will not do it now either.”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, in a Fox News interview, asserted a deadline for Kyiv to accept the White House’s plan, declaring, “It’s over on Thursday.” He warned of further territorial losses for Ukraine if the plan is rejected and claimed Russian president Vladimir Putin does not seek further war, asserting Russia poses no threat to the Baltics or wider Europe.
The kremlin has echoed the urgency, with Peskov urging Zelenskyy to “act now and not later,” citing Russian military advances in eastern Ukraine and a shrinking defensive space for Kyiv.
Řehka’s continued support for Ukraine follows a recent event where he participated in a raffle and a significant donation was made for the honorary chairman. Some voices suggested his activity was “adding fuel to the fire.”
