Thunderstorms could hit western and eastern Japan through Tuesday

Japan Braces for Thunderstorms and Tropical Storm Threat

Nation on Alert for Landslides, Flooding, and Violent Winds

Japan is facing a dual weather threat as thunderstorms are predicted to lash western and eastern regions through Tuesday, while Tropical Storm Nari approaches from the south, potentially bringing severe conditions including landfall.

Intensifying Weather Systems

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that warm, humid air feeding into a tropical depression over the East China Sea is generating rainclouds. Though the depression is expected to weaken Monday morning, a new low-pressure system forming over the Sea of Japan is poised to trigger localized downpours and lightning across western and eastern Japan until Tuesday.

Rainfall Projections and Warnings

Significant rainfall is anticipated. Through Monday evening, up to 200 millimeters are forecast for Shikoku, 120 millimeters for southern Kyushu, and 100 millimeters for the Kinki and Amami regions. The Tokai and Chugoku areas could see up to 80 millimeters. By Tuesday evening, the Tokai region might receive another 200 millimeters, with the Kinki region expecting up to 120 millimeters.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant for potential landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and swollen rivers. Increased caution is also advised regarding lightning strikes and strong wind gusts, with the possibility of tornadoes mentioned.

Tropical Storm Nari Approaches

Adding to the volatile weather picture, Tropical Storm Nari is on a northward trajectory over waters south of Hachijojima island. The storm is expected to near eastern and northern Japan from Monday through Tuesday, with a possibility of making landfall.

This development necessitates heightened awareness of dangerous conditions, including powerful winds, towering waves, and mudslides. Coastal areas can expect rough seas, with wave heights potentially reaching 7 meters off the Tohoku coast and 6 meters near the Kanto region. As of May 2024, Japan experiences an average of 3 to 4 tropical cyclones making landfall or passing near the country each year, highlighting the seasonal vulnerability to such storms.
