Norwegian Authorities Seize Russian Fishing Vessels amid Sanctions Enforcement
Båtsfjord, norway - The Norwegian Coastal administration has taken control of several Russian fishing vessels docked in Norwegian ports, marking a notable escalation in enforcement of international sanctions against Russia. The seizures stem from violations related to restrictions imposed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The move impacts vessels previously operating in Norwegian waters and highlights the growing challenges of managing Russian-linked assets within a neutral country bordering Russia. While the exact number of vessels seized remains undisclosed, the action affects operations in ports like Båtsfjord, where russian fishing boats have been a regular presence. The confiscations are intended to ensure compliance with sanctions regimes and prevent circumvention of restrictions designed to pressure Russia.
Morten Albertsen, port manager in Båtsfjord, previously stated he ”does not lose the night’s sleep of having Russian fishing boats in the harbor,” reflecting a local viewpoint prior to the escalated enforcement. However, concerns regarding the condition of some of the immobilized vessels have surfaced. Skipper Andrej Kalistratov expressed uncertainty earlier this year to NRK about the seaworthiness of his ship after an extended period docked at the quay.
The Norwegian government, through Minister of Fisheries and Sea marianne Sivertsen Næs, has indicated a plan to compel the responsible parties to cover the costs and risks associated with towing or otherwise removing the seized vessels. This follows assessments of various solutions to address the situation.
The confiscations occur as Norwegian authorities continue to monitor the situation and address potential legal complexities surrounding the seized assets. A recent report by VG highlighted ongoing police supervision of another Russian fishing vessel, the Azurit, further demonstrating the increased scrutiny of Russian maritime activity in Norwegian territory.
