Tesla Recalls Nearly 3 Million EVs in China Over Door Handle and Driver Monitoring Safety Issues

August 23, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Tesla is recalling 2,975,910 vehicles in China after the country’s market regulator determined that its emergency door release mechanism is too difficult to find and operate during a collision. According to filings with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, the massive safety action is Tesla’s largest-ever recall in the country and arrives alongside a second recall targeting in-cabin driver attention monitoring systems.

The Scope of the Door Release and Driver Monitoring Recalls

According to safety notices published by regulators, the doorhandle recall affects a broad range of vehicles built or imported over a multi-year production window. Specifically, the action covers 973,156 domestically built Model 3 sedans, 1,956,713 domestically built Model Y crossovers, 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 imported Model X SUVs, and 2,123 imported Model S sedans.

The regulatory concern focuses on the interior emergency mechanical release. When a severe crash disables the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system, the manual backup intended to let occupants escape can prove difficult to identify because it closely matches the surrounding interior trim color. Regulators warn this layout could trap occupants and hinder rescue efforts.

To remedy the defect, Tesla will not alter physical door hardware. Instead, the automaker plans to affix warning labels and deploy an over-the-air software update that alters window control operations to automatically lower windows after an accident is detected. The recall takes effect on September 25, 2026, according to regulatory filings.

Simultaneously, a second recall addresses China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured between March 4, 2019, and December 7, 2025, to rectify deficiencies in driver attention monitoring systems. Tesla stated it will introduce in-cabin camera monitoring alongside existing steering-wheel torque sensors via free over-the-air updates or service center visits.

Competitive Pressures in the World’s Largest EV Market

These regulatory actions compound existing headwinds for Tesla in China, where the company faces intense competition from local manufacturers like BYD and Xiaomi. According to China Passenger Car Association data cited by CNBC, Tesla delivered 25,158 Model Y units in China during July, marking an 18% decline from 30,766 units during the same period in the prior year.

Tesla is not alone in facing scrutiny over flush door handles. Eight other automakers filed coordinated recalls with China’s market regulator for similar interior release issues on the same day, including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng, Geely, Chery, Dongfeng, BAIC BluePark, and FAW. This coordinated safety action follows a broader regulatory clampdown, including a proposed ban in China on hidden door handles announced earlier in the year.

Regulatory Scrutiny Expanding to Western Markets

Regulatory pressure regarding flush and electronic door handles is also escalating in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration widened its probe into the design, and in July, the agency announced plans to initiate rulemaking to mandate robust and obvious door egress systems in all motor vehicles. Members of Congress have similarly introduced legislative measures targeting vehicle exit mechanisms.
