Barcelona Stunned by Sevilla in La Liga upset
Sevilla, Spain – Sevilla defeated Barcelona 4-1 in a stunning La Liga result on Saturday, halting BarcelonaS momentum and raising questions about their form heading into the international break. The defeat marks a important setback for the Catalonian side, while Sevilla secure back-to-back league wins.
Barcelona struggled from the outset, failing to register a shot on target in the first half hour. Sevilla took the lead in the 13th minute through a penalty converted by Alexis Sanchez, awarded after a VAR review of a challenge on Isaac Romero by Ronald Araujo.
Romero extended Sevilla’s advantage in the 37th minute, finishing a first-time shot following a cross from Ruben Vargas. Marcus Rashford pulled one back for Barcelona in added time before halftime, scoring from a tight angle.
The second half saw Barcelona earn a penalty of their own, but Robert Lewandowski fired wide in the 76th minute, squandering a crucial possibility to equalize. Jose Angel Carmona then sealed the victory for Sevilla in the 90th minute with a shot that found the net through a defender’s legs. Akor Adams added a fourth goal in added time, completing the rout.
“We lacked intensity, we couldn’t get the ball out of our half, we didn’t know what to do with the ball … we were never at our best,” Barcelona midfielder Pedri said after the match.
Sevilla will resume their league campaign on October 18 against Mallorca. Barcelona will host Girona on the same day.
