Magdeburg,Germany – A record number of cyclists participated in this year’s “City Cycling” campaign across Saxony-Anhalt,demonstrating a growing commitment to sustainable transportation,according to results released today. Teh initiative, running from May to September, encourages teams - including companies and school classes – to maximize bicycle kilometers logged over 21 consecutive days.
the campaign, organized by the “Climate Alliance Service,” saw especially high activity in Magdeburg and Halle, with participants covering approximately 660,000 and 500,000 kilometers respectively. Dessau-Roßlau and the Börde district also reported meaningful participation.
The German Bicycle Club (ADFC) Saxony-Anhalt noted a consistent three-year increase in cycling participation throughout the state, indicating a shift towards prioritizing bicycle infrastructure and usage. the campaign is funded by the state and the “bicycle-pleasant municipalities” working group.
Nationwide, over 1.2 million people took part in “City Cycling” this year, with Berlin, Hanover, Munich, Hamburg, and Leipzig leading in total kilometers cycled.Magdeburg achieved 115th place nationally. The ADFC emphasized the need for continued investment in cycling infrastructure within future budget planning to support this growing trend, noting that the 25-50 age group and students were particularly active participants, highlighting the bicycle’s appeal as a viable transportation option for commuters.
