States Update Vision Test Requirements for Drivers, Focusing on Older Age Groups
Several states are implementing or have recently updated their policies regarding vision tests for driver’s licence renewals, with a particular focus on older drivers. These changes aim to ensure continued road safety by verifying adequate vision for all age groups, especially as individuals age.
The specific age thresholds adn renewal frequencies for vision tests vary significantly by state. For instance, drivers in Maryland aged 40 and older are required to undergo a vision test at every renewal. in Maine, the requirement begins at age 62, while Ohio and South Dakota set the threshold at age 65.Utah also requires a vision test for drivers aged 65 and older at each renewal.
As drivers approach their 70s, more states introduce vision testing requirements. Iowa and Louisiana require vision tests for drivers aged 70 and older at every renewal. Nebraska has set the age at 72, and Nevada at 71. California, Colorado, and New York require vision tests for drivers aged 70 and older at every renewal.
