Rome’s Stadio Flaminio to Become £380m Football Arena | CityAM

Rome is poised to see the Stadio Flaminio, a venue with a storied past hosting both Six Nations rugby and the 1960 Summer Olympics, undergo a £380 million transformation into a 50,000-capacity arena primarily for the leverage of Serie A football club Lazio. The project, submitted to city bodies for approval, aims to provide Lazio with a modern home, moving them away from the Stadio Olimpico, which they currently share with rivals Roma and is also used for international competitions.

The redevelopment plan was outlined in a club statement released Friday, promising a detailed presentation next week covering the technical aspects of the intervention, the broader land redevelopment project, and anticipated benefits for the city. The Stadio Flaminio’s location, situated on the opposite side of the River Tiber and a 30-minute walk from the Stadio Olimpico, positions it centrally within Rome. This contrasts with Roma’s planned move to a new stadium in the Pietralata area, requiring a journey across the city. The shared history of the Olimpico dates back to 1953, though both clubs previously utilized the Flaminio during renovations to the Olimpico in the late 1980s ahead of the 1990 World Cup.

Currently, Roma holds a superior position in the Serie A standings, occupying fifth place while Lazio trails in eighth. However, both clubs are enduring a prolonged drought for domestic titles, with Roma’s last Serie A triumph occurring in 2001 and Lazio’s in 2000. The new arena is intended to provide Lazio with a dedicated facility to pursue renewed success.

The official presentation of the Stadio Flaminio redevelopment project next week will be a key moment, with the City bodies’ approval determining the future of the historic venue and Lazio’s long-term stadium plans.
