Red Flag Warning: Fire Risk High for Parts of Louisiana & Mississippi

by Emma Walker – News Editor

A Red Flag Warning is in effect Sunday for portions of Louisiana and Mississippi, as strong northerly winds and low relative humidity combine to create heightened fire risk, according to the WAFB First Alert Weather Team.

The warning covers East Baton Rouge, Livingston, Ascension, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Tangipahoa, St. Helena, and Assumption parishes in Louisiana, as well as Wilkinson and Amite counties in Mississippi. The alert extends beyond the immediate WAFB viewing area, encompassing other regions within both states.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to postpone all outdoor burning activities. Proper disposal of cigarette butts is strongly encouraged, and vehicle owners should ensure tow chains do not drag along the ground, potentially sparking a fire. Avoiding driving vehicles on dry grass is also recommended.

The Mississippi River is currently experiencing seasonal peak levels in Fresh Orleans and Baton Rouge, according to reporting from WWNO. While not directly linked to the Red Flag Warning, the high water levels are a significant factor in regional infrastructure, and transportation.

Louisiana’s five lower Mississippi River ports have recently launched a unified marketing strategy, as announced by Louisiana Economic Development. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the region’s position in national and international trade, though it does not directly address the current fire weather concerns.

Further south, Louisiana officials are preparing for public briefings regarding a new Mississippi River bridge project near Baton Rouge, as reported by WBRZ. These briefings are scheduled to provide updates on the construction and potential impacts of the new infrastructure.
