Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme Laptop Chips,Boosting AI capabilities
HONOLULU,HI – December 5,2023 – Qualcomm today announced its next generation of laptop chips, the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme, designed to deliver meaningful performance and efficiency gains, especially in artificial intelligence tasks. The new processors represent a major step forward in Qualcomm’s ambition to compete directly with Intel and AMD in the Windows PC market.
These chips are built on a new Oryon CPU architecture developed by Nuvia, a company Qualcomm acquired in 2021.Nuvia was founded by former Apple engineers and is renowned for its CPU designs focused on performance and power efficiency. Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme offer faster performance and improved battery life compared to competing x86 processors.
The Snapdragon X2 Elite features 12 high-performance cores, while the X2 elite Extreme boasts 14 cores. both chips integrate Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU, which the company says delivers up to 15 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) for on-device AI processing. This enhanced AI capability is intended to accelerate tasks like natural language processing, image recognition, and video editing.
qualcomm highlighted the chips’ integrated Adreno GPU, promising considerable improvements in graphics performance. The company also emphasized the chips’ connectivity features, including support for Wi-Fi 7 and 5G cellular connectivity.
Laptops powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite are expected to be available in mid-2024. Qualcomm anticipates these new chips will enable a new class of thin, light, and powerful Windows laptops with all-day battery life and advanced AI features.
