Putin Expresses Gratitude to Kim Jong Un for Military Aid in Ukraine

BEIJING ‌- Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly thanked North Korean ⁤leader Kim Jong Un for Pyongyang’s military‍ support in the conflict in Ukraine during ⁤a summit in Beijing on Wednesday.Putin specifically acknowledged the contribution of North Korean soldiers ‌in fighting ⁤Ukrainian forces in the Korsk region, stating they fought “valiantly.”

The exchange underscores a deepening alliance between russia adn North Korea, both nations facing ‌meaningful international sanctions. North Korea has emerged as a key ally for Russia since the start‍ of the war in ‌Ukraine, providing thousands of soldiers and‌ significant quantities of weaponry. This ⁢support has been⁤ critical in bolstering Russian forces, notably following a Ukrainian‌ military operation in the⁤ Korsk region last ⁣year.

Putin stated the initiative to send troops originated with Kim Jong un, adding, “We have never forgotten the sacrifices made by your armed forces and the families of your⁢ soldiers.” ⁢kim Jong un ⁣reciprocated, offering continued support ⁤to Russia, declaring,”If there is anything I can or I should do for you and the Russian people,I consider it a duty and a ⁣brotherly‌ commitment.”

The meeting took place during a military parade commemorating ‍the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. The two leaders’ discussion highlights a joint defense treaty signed in 2024, solidifying their‍ commitment to mutual support. Russia faces sanctions related ⁣to its invasion of Ukraine, while North Korea is sanctioned for its nuclear‍ weapons program.

Putin’s acknowledgment of ‌North Korean assistance comes as Russia continues to seek allies to sustain its military ⁤efforts in Ukraine, now entering its third year. The increased cooperation raises concerns among Western nations about⁢ the potential for further‍ escalation and the circumvention⁢ of international sanctions.
