Brothers Protesting Gaza War Pulled Inside Egyptian UN Mission, Then Arrested

New York, NY – A video circulating online shows two brothers protesting the war in Gaza being forcibly pulled‌ inside the Permanent Mission of Egypt to the United Nations in New York City before being arrested by police earlier ⁣this week.

Yasin ElSammak, 22, and his brother Ali elsammak, 15, both U.S.citizens, were identified by‍ their parents as the protesters in the video.

Husam Khaled, a ⁣protester who recorded the incident on Wednesday, said he attempted to chain lock⁤ the⁤ doors of the Egyptian Mission. After stepping away ‍briefly, he returned to find⁢ the brothers missing. Khaled had asked Yasin to film the⁤ protest in case of⁣ his own arrest.

Video ⁢footage shared by Khaled shows the brothers being grabbed and tackled to the ground outside the building. An onlooker can be heard shouting for ⁢help, saying, “They’re bringing the kids inside the building.”

Khaled claims Yasin was struck in the neck with a chain and‌ ali ⁣was⁢ pinned against a wall. He stated,”I was telling them,’It was me,let them go,they didn’t do anything.'”

Another video shows Khaled questioning⁤ a man emerging ‍from the building in⁤ Arabic, asking if he was acting on the orders of Egypt’s Minister of foreign Affairs and immigration, Badr Abdelatty. The ⁣man reportedly‍ responded affirmatively.

The incident ⁢comes amid rising tensions between protesters and Egyptian officials following the release of a leaked audio recording allegedly featuring Abdelatty instructing ‍staff to “grab” and “drag” protesters inside embassy⁤ buildings and contact the police. NBC News has not independently verified the authenticity of the recording.

Police confirmed the arrests. The 22-year-old was charged with assault,⁢ and the 15-year-old faces similar charges.

The Egyptian Mission to⁢ the⁤ U.N., Egyptian Foreign Ministry, and Egyptian embassies in Paris and The Hague did not immediately respond to requests for‍ comment.
