The world number two Bolaji clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory against the top-ranked and Paralympic champion Qonitah Syakuroh in the women’s SL3 final. Bolaji won the first set 21-16, but Syakuroh responded with a 21-16 win in the second. In a closely contested third set, Bolaji rallied from 11 points down to secure the championship 21-13.
Bolaji’s path to the final included a dominant 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) win over Australia’s Celine Vinot in Round 2. She then defeated world number 10 Milena Surreau of France 2-0 (21-8, 21-18), followed by a 2-0 (21-5, 21-15) victory against India’s Sanjana kumari.In the semi-finals, Bolaji once again defeated Celine Vinot with a commanding 2-0 (21-4, 21-8) performance.
The Badminton Federation of Nigeria President, Francis Orbih, lauded Bolaji’s achievement, highlighting her dedication and resilience, especially in overcoming Syakuroh, who had defeated her in the Paris 2024 Paralympics semi-finals.”I am pleased with this victory, especially as she defeated the world number one who beat her in Paris last year,” Mr. Orbih stated, expressing confidence in Bolaji’s continued progress towards the next Paralympic Games.
Mr. Orbih added that the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, the Badminton Confederation of Africa, and the National Sports commission are proud of Bolaji’s contributions to elevating Nigeria and Africa in the global para badminton arena.
