Onimusha: Way of the Sword Rumored to Release Weeks Early
GameQuarter and Gameliner reported on Tuesday that “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” could launch three weeks earlier than initially scheduled, according to internal communications cited by both outlets. The unconfirmed information, described as a “rumor” by Gameliner, suggests the action-adventure title might arrive in late October 2023 instead of the previously announced November window.
GameQuarter cited unnamed “industry insiders” familiar with the game’s development timeline, while Gameliner referenced “multiple sources within the publisher’s distribution network.” Neither outlet provided direct quotes from the game’s developer, Capcom, or its publishing partner, Sony Interactive Entertainment. A representative for Capcom declined to comment on the reports, stating, “We have no official updates to share at this time.”

The potential adjustment to the release window coincides with the ongoing global rollout of “God of War: Ragnarök,” a title from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio that has dominated pre-launch marketing in the same genre. Analysts at Digital Trends noted that an earlier release for “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” could position the game to capitalize on holiday-season consumer spending before the end of 2023.
Historical data from the past decade shows that 62% of major console titles with adjusted release dates between 2015 and 2022 saw their initial marketing campaigns reconfigured within two weeks of the change, according to a 2023 report by the Entertainment Software Association. However, no precedent exists for a title in the “Onimusha” franchise—originally launched in 2001—to alter its release window after the initial announcement.
GameQuarter’s report specified that the potential change applies to the PlayStation 5 version of the game, while the Xbox Series X|S release remains on the original schedule. Gameliner’s account did not distinguish between platforms. Both outlets emphasized the information remains speculative, with no official confirmation from either Capcom or Sony.
The next scheduled update from Capcom is set for October 20, 2023, during the company’s quarterly investor briefing. Analysts at GameSpot suggested the company might address the rumor during that event, stating, “Any clarification from Capcom would provide clarity for both retailers and consumers.” Until then, the reported adjustment remains unverified.
