Oklahoma’s First Perinatal Behavioral Health Clinic Opens, Offering Crucial Support for New Mothers
Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma has launched a vital new resource for expectant and new mothers: the state’s first perinatal behavioral health clinic. The clinic aims to address the important need for mental health support during and after pregnancy, providing essential care to both mothers and babies.
According to Kalee Woody, a general psychiatrist at the clinic, untreated mental health conditions during pregnancy pose a serious risk to both mother and child. Postpartum depression, anxiety, and trauma are common challenges, and the clinic offers a safe and supportive habitat for mothers navigating these difficulties.
“That’s a really vulnerable time for mental health,” Woody explained. “Moms often feel guilty and put immense pressure on themselves, making it hard to ask for help.”
The clinic, officially opened on Monday, focuses on providing individualized care.Staff will answer questions, address concerns, and develop tailored treatment plans to best support both the mother and her baby.
“We are letting everyone know we’re here and available for moms experiencing their first mental health crisis or ongoing problems,” Woody stated.
The clinic is currently accepting patients and is poised to fill a critical gap in Oklahoma’s maternal care system, offering much-needed resources and support to families across the state.
