Wellington, New Zealand – A Wellington-based small business is grappling with potential financial hardship after NZ Post suspended deliveries to ⁢the United States in response to recently implemented tariffs. The disruption threatens the livelihood of businesses heavily reliant on the American market.

Impact on South Pacific Berets

South⁣ pacific Berets, a specialized retailer serving Basque beret ⁤enthusiasts worldwide, is especially ‍vulnerable. Owner Daan Kolthoff stated ⁤that approximately 90 percent of his customer base resides in the US. ⁣”Most of my‌ customers,⁣ about 90⁤ percent, live in the US,” Kolthoff said.

Kolthoff’s business model involves importing berets from⁤ various countries – France, Spain, ⁤Italy, the Czech Republic, and Argentina – bringing them to New Zealand, and ⁤then shipping them to customers ⁣globally. ⁤The vast majority of these sales are directed towards the United States.

Basque berets have a rich cultural ‍history, originating in the ‌Basque Country,⁣ a ‌region spanning parts of Spain and France.

unexpected Suspension and‍ Lack of Communication

The suspension of shipments came without prior notification, according to Kolthoff. He discovered the issue while attempting to process orders through NZ Post’s eShip system. “I found out yesterday trying to send ⁣parcels to the US via [NZ Post’s] ‍ eShip system, but I wasn’t able to,” he explained. Despite‍ contacting NZ post, he received no immediate response.

Kolthoff now faces the ⁤daunting task of processing refunds for existing⁤ orders and informing customers of the temporary inability to fulfill new ones. “It’s very painful. I have⁤ to contact them⁢ and refund their⁢ money, because I have no ⁢idea how long this will take or what sort⁤ of increase in cost there will be,” he said. He ⁣fears the situation could ultimately ⁤lead to the closure of his business.

NZ Post’s Response‍ and the ‌tariff Issue

NZ post acknowledged the ⁤disruption and stated it is indeed working to adapt to the new regulations.A spokesperson explained that recent guidance from US Customs ⁣& Border ‌Protection necessitates updates to shipment data,⁤ duty and tax payments,⁤ and processing procedures. ⁤”Guidance from US Customs & Border Protection was only recently issued and requires a ‍number of changes for both businesses and ‌NZ Post, including updates to⁣ shipment data, duty and tax payments, and how goods are processed ⁣for entry into the⁤ US,” the spokesperson said.

The airline partners‍ of NZ Post have also decided to cease carrying mail subject to⁢ the‍ new tariffs. Currently, only economy letters and express document services to the US and ⁤its territories remain operational. NZ Post anticipates a short-term suspension but cannot provide‍ a definitive timeline for resuming ‌full services.
