North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile Ahead of US-South Korea Military Drills

Early Morning Launch Near Wonsan

North Korea fired at least one ballistic missile off its east coast toward the Sea of Japan on Wednesday. The launch marks the country’s ninth weapons test of 2026.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported detecting the launch from the Wonsan area at approximately 6:00 am local time. It follows a previous short-range ballistic missile test conducted on August 6, which was the first such activity by Pyongyang since late June.

Tokyo Lodges Formal Diplomatic Protest

Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi condemned the launch at a press conference. He called it a threat to regional peace and security and confirmed that Tokyo lodged a formal protest through diplomatic channels in Beijing.

Japanese authorities stated that the missile appeared to have fallen outside the country’s exclusive economic zone. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s government issued instructions to maintain operational readiness.

Shadow of Upcoming Allied Drills

The launch precedes the scheduled kickoff of annual summer military exercises by South Korea and the United States, set to begin on August 17. Pyongyang routinely condemns these allied maneuvers, characterizing them as rehearsals for an invasion.

Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert at Kyungnam University, noted that North Korea has historically responded to joint military exercises by the allies.

“This is a message that Pyongyang is closely watching the upcoming drills and could stage a provocation if it deems one necessary,” Lim said.

Hostile Intentions Cited by Leadership

During previous exercises, North Korean leadership publicly asserted that the scale and nature of the allied drills demonstrated hostile intent. This dynamic consistently prompts counter-measures from Pyongyang.

Military authorities in Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington are conducting a joint analysis of the launch details.

North Korea typically releases official information regarding its missile tests a day after they occur through state media. However, no immediate confirmation was published by Pyongyang following the Wednesday morning event.
