NGK Insulators: Pioneering Ceramics for a Sustainable Future | Mobility, Energy & IT Solutions
NGK Insulators, a Japanese technology company specializing in ceramics, announced today that a leader driving its EnerCera battery business has been named a finalist for the Women Leaders in Electronics Awards 2026. The recognition comes as NGK continues to expand its focus on energy solutions and sustainable technologies.
Founded in 1919, NGK Insulators has evolved from a manufacturer of insulators for power transmission to a diversified technology company operating in mobility, energy, IT, and industry sectors. The company’s core competency lies in its proprietary ceramic technologies, which are applied to a wide range of products, including catalytic converters for automobiles and, increasingly, energy storage systems.
The EnerCera series, highlighted in the announcement, represents a significant investment by NGK in the lithium-ion rechargeable battery market. These batteries are characterized by their compact size, thin profile, and high energy density, making them suitable for a variety of applications, including sustainable energy infrastructure. Earlier this year, NGK’s EnerCera technology supported a demonstration experiment of a tsunami balloon project conducted by Tohoku University, showcasing its potential in emergency preparedness.
NGK’s commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond battery technology. The company is also a leading manufacturer of HONEYCERAM®, a ceramic catalyst carrier used in automotive exhaust systems to neutralize harmful substances. With over 2 billion units produced, HONEYCERAM® plays a crucial role in reducing vehicle emissions. NGK also produces diesel particulate filters and NOx sensors, further contributing to cleaner air.
Recent company activity includes an agreement with Chubu Electric Power to jointly research the practical application of kilns that burn ammonia, a potential pathway to reducing carbon emissions. NGK was also recently recognized as an “Eco-First Company” by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment and received an “A List” rating in CDP Water Security for the second consecutive year. A global campaign showcasing NGK’s innovation for a sustainable future was launched in partnership with CNN earlier this month.
Financially, NGK recently revised its fiscal year-end dividend forecast and reported consolidated financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2025. The company has also been streamlining its portfolio, completing the disposal of treasury stock and terminating an agreement regarding the acquisition of shares in a German company, Deutsche KNM GmbH.
NGK’s medium- to long-term vision, “NGK Group Vision Road to 2050,” outlines a strategic shift towards Carbon Neutral (CN) and Digital Society (DS) fields. The company is also developing the Translucent Alumina Wafer, a key component for advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes, indicating a broadening scope of technological innovation.
