Rescuers Respond to Suspected Meningitis B Outbreak in Roztoky

Rescuers, police, and firefighters have been on the scene in Roztoky, near Prague, since Monday evening due to a suspected outbreak of infectious meningitis B. Approximately 80 individuals are under medical care, with no reported life-threatening conditions, according to Marek Hylebrant, a spokesperson.
Meningococcal infections can lead to brain inflammation. Hylebrant stated that the situation is under examination and more precise details is expected by morning. The response includes three traffic inspectors, a rescue crew, and a team with a doctor.
The server Novinky.cz reported that the suspected meningitis cases are among individuals at an accommodation facility on Tyršovo Square. Police and firefighters have cordoned off the surrounding area.

It is estimated that about 10 percent of those infected with meningococcal bacteria may experience lasting consequences, such as amputation or deafness.In the Czech Republic, vaccination protects against types A, C, W, and Y in about half of children under two years old. Type B vaccination covers about 70 percent of this age group, and combined vaccinations are administered to about a third of teenagers.
according to statistics, there were 68 cases of meningococcal diseases in the Czech Republic between 2017 and 2020, resulting in ten deaths.The number of infections and fatalities afterward decreased,with three deaths recorded between 2018 and 2020. Last year, 15 individuals were infected, and one person died, with similar figures reported this year.
