The 2022 romantic comedy Marry Me, starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson, has been released on 4K Ultra HD, offering a visually enhanced experience of the film four years after its initial theatrical and streaming debut. The release includes a variety of bonus features, providing insight into the making of the movie and its musical components.
The film centers on Kat Valdez (Lopez), a pop superstar who, moments before marrying her fellow musician Bastian (Maluma) onstage, discovers his infidelity. In a spontaneous decision, she chooses to marry Charlie Gilbert (Wilson), a math teacher holding a “Marry Me” sign in the audience. The ensuing relationship, initially a public facade, unexpectedly develops into genuine affection.
While the premise is characteristic of the romantic comedy genre, Marry Me garnered attention for its parallels to aspects of Jennifer Lopez’s personal life, specifically her history of highly publicized relationships and divorces. Although, according to reporting from MovieDelic, the film is actually based on the 2007 webcomic of the same name by Bobby Crosby, though screenwriters John Rogers, Tami Sagher, and Harper Dill did make alterations to the original story. These changes included relocating the setting to New York City and modifying Charlie’s profession from a high school guidance counselor to a math teacher.
The 4K release boasts improved picture quality and Dolby Atmos audio, enhancing the musical performances featured in the film. Both Lopez and Maluma contributed to the film’s soundtrack, which included the single “Pa’ Ti,” released in September 2020 and debuting at number nine on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, marking Lopez’s highest chart debut in the United States since 2017, as noted in a Wikipedia entry for the film.
Bonus features included with the 4K release offer a behind-the-scenes seem at the production. Director Kat Coiro and producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas provide an audio commentary, and a series of featurettes explore Lopez’s character, the film’s production, its use of music, and the experience of filming at Madison Square Garden during an actual Maluma concert. Additional content includes a lyric video for “On My Way,” deleted scenes, and a gag reel.
Newsweek reported that Coiro and Goldsmith-Thomas emphasized Lopez’s contribution to the film, describing her role as “meta,” suggesting she brought her own experiences to the character of Kat Valdez.
