Malcolm-Jamal Warner, ‘Cosby Show’ actor, dies at 54

Actor and Grammy winner Carl Weathers, best known for his role as apollo Creed in the “Rocky” film series, has died at the age of 76. His family announced his passing on Thursday, stating he died peacefully in his sleep.

Weathers, a versatile performer, also garnered critical acclaim for his work in television and voice acting. He received an Emmy nomination for his role as a detective in the series “Arrested Advancement” and lent his voice to the character of Combat Carl in the animated film “Toy Story 4.” His extensive filmography includes appearances in “Predator,” “close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and “Happy Gilmore.”

Born in New Orleans,Weathers initially pursued a career in professional football before transitioning to acting. He played in the Canadian Football League for the BC Lions before making his acting debut in the 1975 film “Friday Foster.” His breakout role as the charismatic boxer Apollo Creed in “rocky” (1976) launched him into stardom, and he reprised the role in three sequels.

Beyond his iconic boxing role, Weathers showcased his range in various genres. He starred as a police chief in the action-comedy “In the Heat of the Night” and later as a mentor figure in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” for which he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama series.

Weathers’ legacy extends beyond his on-screen performances. He was also a respected director, helming episodes of popular television shows such as “The Mandalorian,” “Chicago P.D.,” and “The Shield.”

Carl Weathers is survived by his children, Jason and Matthew Weathers, and his daughter, Emily Weathers. His family has requested privacy during this time of mourning.
