MAGA Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene announces her retirement after Trump’s “traitor” accusations | International

Washington D.C. – Marjorie Taylor Greene, the controversial Republican congresswoman known for embracing conspiracy theories and aligning‍ herself with the MAGA movement, announced her resignation from the House of Representatives on Friday, following months of escalating tension with former President Donald Trump. Greene stated she never ⁤felt she ⁣coudl⁢ “fit in” ⁣to the city and its rules.

The ⁢resignation comes after a period of political turbulence for Greene, who faced censure and removal from committee assignments shortly after taking office in early 2021. The ‍Democratic majority in the House took action due to her ‌history of promoting unsubstantiated claims and expressing ⁢support for violence against political⁣ opponents. In⁤ a recent interview on CNN, Greene expressed regret for her past “tense rhetoric.”

More recently, Greene spearheaded efforts to declassify documents ⁤related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted ‌sex offender, ⁢successfully pressuring both chambers of Congress and ultimately Trump himself to release the files. Despite initial resistance, Trump signed the legislation compelling‌ the release, after a 15-year friendship with Epstein.

President Trump ‍described Greene’s departure as “great news for the country” in a telephone interview with ABC News.

Greene’s resignation triggers a‍ special election‍ in Georgia’s congressional district,to be called by Governor Brian Kemp within ten days. The⁣ winner will serve untill January 2027, though they are not guaranteed to ‌be the party’s nominee in the 2026 legislative ‌elections. The House Republican’s already narrow majority will be further diminished until a replacement is chosen.
