Latvia is increasing its security posture in response to the upcoming “Zapad 2025″ military exercise conducted by Russia and Belarus. the nation has announced a temporary closure of portions of its airspace, initially until September 18th, with the possibility of extension, to enhance the readiness of its air forces.

According to an analysis by Latvia’s Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB),while the direct threat to Latvia and NATO from “Zapad 2025” is currently assessed as low,Russia and Belarus are utilizing the exercise for strategic communication purposes. The SAB believes the exercise serves as a demonstration by the Russian government, under Vladimir Putin, of its continued military development and ability to respond to perceived threats despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Security sources, including the Latvian Defense Sector News Portal “Sargs.lv,” have cautioned about the potential for provocations by Russia and Belarus targeting neighboring countries, including latvia and other NATO members, through both direct actions and information warfare.

The NAF is actively gathering intelligence, monitoring, and analyzing the progression of “Zapad 2025.” Latvian authorities have affirmed their commitment to defend the country, and are prepared to act in coordination with NATO allies if necessary.
