Kansas Senate Race: Pastor Adam Hamilton Challenges Incumbent Roger Marshall

Kansas Senate Race: Pastor Adam Hamilton Challenges Incumbent Roger Marshall

October 15, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Rev. Adam Hamilton, a Methodist megachurch pastor and independent-minded Democrat, is neck-and-neck with incumbent Republican U.S. Roger Marshall in ruby-red Kansas, presenting a rare challenge in a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932.

How is Adam Hamilton approaching the Kansas Senate race?

Hamilton is the pastor of the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, leading the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood. He launched his Senate campaign in May 2026 after watching Washington politics and concluding that things had to change. Describing himself as both a liberal and a conservative, Hamilton stated in an interview with ABC News’ Jon Karl that his appeal relies on crossing party lines. I’ll only get elected with Republicans voting for me, Hamilton said. While Donald Trump won Kansas by 16 points in 2024, a New York Times/Siena poll found that 55% of likely voters disapprove of his job as president.

Contrarian News reported that Hamilton discussed his motivations and faith-based perspective with Editor-in-Chief Jen Rubin, noting that his wife encouraged him to run after watching him spend 36 years listening with empathy and trying to solve community problems. On policy issues, Hamilton holds positions that break from national Democratic orthodoxy. When questioned about Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Hamilton told Contrarian News that while ICE’s original post-9/11 mandate to protect Americans from dangerous individuals is important, the agency has been politicized and militarized under recent political agendas.

What are Senator Roger Marshall and his campaign saying in response?

Incumbent Roger Marshall has pushed back aggressively against Hamilton’s moderate framing. Following the ABC News broadcast, Marshall posted on social media calling Hamilton the ultimate snake oil salesman and asserting that the pastor has been a proud donor to Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Marshall has repeatedly labeled Hamilton too woke.

Vice President JD Vance held a rally in Kansas in September to support Marshall, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy joined the senator on a tour of a radar manufacturing plant. Speaking to ABC News during that tour, Marshall dismissed reports of defections among Republican voters, maintaining that what I see across the state is Republicans coming home.

Why are Kansas voters divided over the candidates?

Economic pressures are driving voter realignment across the state. Philip Perry, a 66-year-old rancher from Oskaloosa and former president of the Kansas Livestock Association, told ABC News that he is disappointed with the current administration over federal agricultural and tariff policies that have driven up costs for fuel and fertilizer. Though Perry praised Hamilton for bringing people together, he stated he would still vote for Marshall because the incumbent has done a good enough job. Meanwhile, Steve Bowlin, a third-generation farmer in Olathe, said presidential endorsements do not influence his vote, emphasizing that he simply wants someone who speaks for the American farmer.

Other traditional Republicans have crossed party lines. Bruce Bratman, a three-time Trump voter, told ABC News he is actively knocking on doors for the Democratic challenger. Bob Beatty, political science chair at the University of Washburn, told ABC News that Hamilton’s extensive background in church leadership gives him elite communication and fundraising skills, calling him a gift from the political gods to the Democrats.

What outside spending and local issues shape the final weeks of the campaign?

Outside super PACs aligned with both national parties are pouring millions of dollars into the state as polls tighten. Rob Fillion, executive director of the Kansas GOP, told ABC News that the barrage of negative advertising has created confusion among voters who no longer know who or what they are voting for. In addition to agricultural tariff concerns highlighted in Contrarian News, recent reports that Senator Marshall was involved in suing over 700 patients for unpaid medical debts have further intensified local voter frustration.
