Jeremy Lin Faced intimidation During CBA Play, Agent Reveals
Jeremy Lin recently announced his retirement after a 15-year professional basketball career, which included stints in the NBA, China’s CBA, and Taiwan‘s P. league+. During his time playing in China, Lin experienced a level of physicality and, according to his agent, intimidation that he hadn’t encountered previously.
Wang Fan, Lin’s agent, revealed an incident during a CBA game where an opposing player threatened to “destroy” Lin. Initially confused by the remark, Lin questioned the referee, but received no response. He then sought clarification from his teammates, who confirmed the threat was intended as intimidation.
“Shuhao just shook his head, and he quickly accepted such treatment,” Wang Fan stated, using Lin’s Chinese name.He added that Lin had been warned before joining the CBA about the potential for intense competition, and while prepared for physical play, the psychological aspect was unsettling. “In fact, before joining the CBA, we reminded him that he might encounter unusual intensity of confrontation. He also said that he was often beaten in the United States and was mentally prepared in China, poor kid.”
Lin also experienced injuries while playing in both the CBA and Taiwan’s professional leagues, frequently voicing concerns to referees about overly aggressive play. In Taiwan, one opponent suffered a head laceration requiring stitches and a sprained ankle during a game last year, prompting Lin to publicly appeal for player safety. “Protecting players should be the referee’s top priority. I came to Taiwan to hope to play a game healthily,” he stated at the time. He also recounted numerous hospital visits due to injuries sustained while playing in Taiwan.
The repeated injuries and aggressive play ultimately contributed to Lin’s decision to retire, a decision supported by his parents who expressed concern over his well-being and even asked him if it was time to step away from the game.
