Jakarta Security Stable Amid Protests and Police Action

Jakarta, Indonesia‌ -⁤ September 6, 2025 ⁢- A top Indonesian military commander declared Jakarta “safe and conducive” today following weeks of widespread protests that gripped the capital city. The assessment comes amid ongoing joint ‌patrols by the Indonesian Military (TNI)‍ and the National Police, implemented‌ in response to escalating demonstrations throughout August and into September.

That demonstration resulted in clashes ​and arrests. subsequent protests on August 28 saw workers presenting​ six‍ demands, alongside‌ renewed calls from students and school students for the dissolution of the House. These protests escalated into riots after authorities deployed tear gas and water​ cannons.

A‌ turning ‍point ‍in ⁢the unrest occurred with the death of Affan⁣ Kurniawan, a ​21-year-old online ride-hailing driver, who was struck by‍ a⁤ Police​ Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle in Bendungan Hilir. The incident ignited public outrage ⁤and spurred⁤ protests⁤ by online motorcycle taxi drivers across multiple cities. Demonstrators also targeted the homes of legislators, including Ahmad Sahroni and Eko Patrio, resulting in vandalism.

President Prabowo⁣ Subianto responded by directing the National Police Chief to take “firm action against anarchist acts.” A compilation of “17+8 people’s demands” for the ⁢president, ‍the House ‍of Representatives,‍ the national Police, and the ‍TNI subsequently circulated on social media.

Deputy Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Imam ⁤Sugianto, echoed the commander’s assessment⁢ of improved stability,⁣ stating⁤ on Thursday,‍ September 4, ‍2025, after a meeting with the House of Representatives Commission I, “God willing, it is already conducive, ⁢under the ​supervision of the TNI-Polri.”
