Detroit Tigers Select Catcher Michael Oliveto in Competitive Balance Round A
The Detroit Tigers continued their MLB Draft on Sunday night, selecting high school catcher Michael Oliveto with the 34th overall pick in Competitive Balance Round A. Oliveto, a Yale commit, hails from New York.The Tigers’ first-round selection at No. 24 overall comes with a recommended bonus slot value of $3,726,300.Teams have the flexibility to exceed slot values for individual picks, provided they remain within their overall bonus pool. Savings from signing picks below slot value can be allocated to later selections. This year,the Tigers have a total of $10,990,800 available for their 21 draft picks,ranking them 17th in the league for bonus pool allocation. MLB rules permit teams to exceed their bonus pool by up to 5% without penalty; exceeding this limit incurs a 75% fine on the overage. No team has surpassed the 5% threshold since the current slotting system was implemented.
The first day of the MLB Draft, wich concluded Sunday, encompassed the first three rounds. The draft is scheduled to continue on Monday, July 14, with rounds 4 through 20 commencing at 11:30 a.m.ET and broadcast on MLB.com.
