Iran Missiles Target Diego Garcia: US & UK Base Attacked
Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward the joint U.S.-U.K. Military base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean early Saturday, U.S. Officials confirmed. The attack marks a significant escalation in regional tensions and represents Iran’s first known strike attempt beyond the Middle East, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and multiple U.S. Officials.
Neither missile successfully struck the base. One failed during flight, while the other was intercepted by an SM-3 interceptor launched from a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, though it remains unclear whether the intercept was successful, officials stated. The missiles are believed to be part of the Khorramshahr-class intermediate-range ballistic missile family, a liquid-fueled system.
Diego Garcia, located approximately 3,795 kilometers (2,358 miles) from Iran, is a critical logistics hub supporting long-range bomber deployments, nuclear submarine operations, and guided-missile naval forces. The attempted strike is seen as a signal directed at allied force posture rather than a tactical objective, according to U.S. Officials.
The launch comes after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized the U.S. To leverage British-linked military bases, including Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford, to launch operations targeting Iranian positions linked to the Strait of Hormuz. Previously, UK access to these bases was limited to defensive actions. The authorization allows U.S. Forces to carry out strikes aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the strait, operating under the framework of “collective self-defence.”
The incident raises questions about the true range of Iran’s missile capabilities. While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated last month that Tehran limits its missile range to 2,000 kilometers, reports from the Israeli research center Alma suggest a range of up to 3,000 kilometers. The American Iran Watch has previously assessed the missiles’ range as reaching 4,000 kilometers, a capability demonstrated by this latest launch.
The Pentagon has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the missile launch. The U.S. Navy has not confirmed the success of the intercept.
The attempted strike occurred as the U.S. And U.K. Continue to assess the implications of the expanded operational scope authorized for U.S. Forces utilizing British bases. No further actions have been announced as of Saturday afternoon.
