Indonesia Backs Global sumud Flotilla, Ensures Safety of Indonesian Participants
Jakarta, Indonesia – the Indonesian government has voiced its full support for the Indonesia Global Peace Convoy’s (IGPC) participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission aiming to deliver aid to Gaza and challenge the ongoing blockade. The government is also actively working to ensure the safety and protection of the 30 Indonesian nationals joining the effort.
Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela confirmed the government’s awareness of the Indonesian participation in a video statement on Sunday. The flotilla is scheduled to depart from Tunisia for the Gaza Strip on September 10th.
To safeguard its citizens, Indonesia has coordinated with its embassies in the Mediterranean region. The Indonesian Embassy in Tunis is currently providing logistical support to the volunteers during their transit and has briefed them on potential risks within Gaza, according to Mulachela.
Further bolstering security measures, the Indonesian embassies in Cairo and Rome – which includes jurisdiction over Cyprus – have been instructed to closely monitor the flotilla’s progress and the well-being of the Indonesian participants.
“The indonesian government is consistent in supporting the struggle for independence of the Palestinian nation in accordance with international laws and regulations,” Mulachela stated.
Ambassador Zuhairi Misrawi, in a post on his Instagram account (@zuhairimisrawi) on Sunday, highlighted Indonesia’s “firm determination for Palestinian independence and the end of the Gaza blockade” thru this mission. He also praised the naming of five Indonesian boats within the flotilla after prominent Indonesian independence fighters: Soekarno, Diponegoro, Hasanuddin, Pati Unus, and Malahayati.
The Global Sumud Flotilla intends to break the Israeli blockade and deliver vital humanitarian assistance to the over 2 million residents of Gaza.Organizers state the mission also aims to raise global awareness about the ongoing blockade and what they describe as the ongoing persecution of Palestinians.
The flotilla includes activists and representatives from numerous countries, including Malaysia, the United States, the netherlands, Italy, Colombia, and Tunisia.
This support for the flotilla follows Indonesia’s ongoing aid efforts, including the recent delivery of 10 trucks carrying 15,000 aid packages to Gaza via Egypt, and the airdropping of 91 tons of aid since August 17th.
