Indian woman Locates Missing husband on Instagram Eight Years After Disappearance
Hardoy, India – An Indian woman has discovered her husband, who vanished eight years ago while she was pregnant, living under a different identity and reportedly remarried, thanks to a chance encounter on Instagram. The revelation has sparked public outrage and a police investigation.
The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by women in India abandoned by their husbands, and the increasing role of social media in uncovering hidden lives. While desertion is not uncommon, the length of the disappearance and the alleged subsequent marriage have ignited a national conversation about accountability and women’s rights. The husband is now in police custody facing charges related to bigamy.
According to police reports, the wife filed an official complaint initiating a case against Gitundra under Article 82 (1) of the bharatia Nia Sanhita law, pertaining to multiple marriages. Investigations revealed Gitundra had married another woman in Ludiana and was already under arrest when the complaint was lodged, confirmed Santosh Kumar Singh, a Hardoy police official.
The wife recounted her ordeal to The Indian Express, stating she married on April 28, 2017, but endured physical abuse shortly after. She returned to her father’s home in November of the same year, and her husband disappeared four months into her pregnancy, with his family claiming ignorance of his whereabouts. “I even saw the video on social media and made sure it was him,” she said.
Gitundra had reportedly been living in Ludiana for years, employed at a fabric factory, and allegedly entered into a second marriage ther.The discovery of his continued existence after eight years of absence has shocked the local community, prompting widespread discussion about his motives for abandoning his wife and child.
