Igloo Inc. is shutting down its blockchain project Abstract

Igloo Inc. is shutting down its blockchain project Abstract

October 8, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc. is shutting down its blockchain project, Abstract, on December 15, 2026, after funding the network for 18 months and absorbing tens of millions of dollars in losses, reported TheStreet. Despite processing over 325 million transactions and securing brand partnerships with Disney and Red Bull Racing, the consumer crypto network failed to establish sustainable user demand.

The Divergence Between Retail Toys and Blockchain Infrastructure

Originally launched in 2021 as a collection of non-fungible tokens, the Pudgy Penguins brand transitioned successfully into mass-market retail. In September 2023, the brand partnered with Walmart to distribute plushies, figurines, and collectibles across 2,000 U.S. stores and the retailer’s e-commerce platform. Last month, the company announced that Pudgy Toys would secure a prominent feature in its official holiday shopping catalog.

While physical plush toys thrived among shoppers unfamiliar with blockchain technology, the digital infrastructure side struggled to maintain active participants. Igloo Inc. launched the Abstract blockchain in January 2025 to onboard millions of cartoon fans into decentralized applications and games. That network ultimately attracted more than 400,000 users and generated $40 million in revenue, yet executives concluded that thin day-to-day engagement and slow institutional adoption left no viable path forward.

Luca Netz Explains Why Igloo Is Shutting Down Abstract

Igloo CEO Luca Netz addressed the closure by explaining that the firm deliberately chose not to raise capital through a native cryptocurrency token because insufficient real-world demand existed for the product. On Oct. 6, he announced it is shutting down, noting that the company funded Abstract for 18 months and lost tens of millions of dollars building products and signing up brands. He added, The entire team at Abstract has worked tirelessly with a tremendous amount of passion to make the consumer crypto vision come true. I cannot fault a single one of them for this outcome.

Migration Deadlines for Network Users

With the shutdown scheduled for December 15, 2026, users holding capital on the Abstract network must migrate their digital assets off the chain using the project’s native bridge or Migration Hub. The company confirmed that any funds remaining on the network after the deadline will become permanently inaccessible.

The transition window remains strictly time-sensitive, requiring account holders to complete transfers ahead of the mid-December cutoff.
