How the US Army is Rapidly Integrating Drones and Tech into Formations

The U.S. Army is fundamentally overhauling its tactical formations and equipment acquisition pipelines to mirror the rapid drone innovation witnessed in the Ukraine war, deploying immature technology directly to soldiers for iterative field feedback, according to Under Secretary of the Army Michael Obadal speaking July 30 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

The Battle Lab of Ukraine and Modern Positional Warfare

Modern military strategy has shifted dramatically as defense leaders examine the reality of combat in Eastern Europe. According to Under Secretary of the Army Michael Obadal, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine serves as an incredible battle lab where no one is iterating technology faster than the Ukrainians.

Initial engagements between Russian and Ukrainian forces primarily materialized as positional warfare because neither side possessed an actual maneuver, combined-arms army. Two uncoordinated armies collided, settled into fixed positions, and subsequently unlocked an explosion of drone innovation.

The contemporary battlefield now features a dead zone spanning several kilometers between opposing forces. This operational landscape bears a striking resemblance to World War I, where artillery once dominated the terrain. Today, however, the drone acts as the ultimate enabler of soldiers, fundamentally altering how military units deny or take terrain.

The U.S. Department of Defense has absorbed these lessons directly into its training doctrine. Basic training now incorporates drone operations, introducing recruits to unmanned systems almost immediately upon entering the military.

Operationalizing Unmanned Systems at U.S. Training Centers

At the Army National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, operational forces routinely execute exercises utilizing diverse drone systems to achieve distinct tactical effects. According to Under Secretary Obadal, these platforms deliver electronic warfare capabilities, persistent observation, calling-for-fire coordination, and first-person-view kinetic actions.

The Army has invested heavily in purchasing commercial off-the-shelf drones customized for military use, distributing them to nearly every Army division down to regimental units. Leadership provides small groups of soldiers with dedicated budgets and facilities to build low-cost drones for local training areas.

These systems are intentionally inexpensive and designed to withstand crashes. The primary objective is building an institutional repository of knowledge by demanding hundreds of repetitions daily. This practical experience rapidly informs evolving doctrine across the force.

Complementing these field experiments, a February 2026 exercise at Fort Stewart, Georgia, demonstrated soldiers experimenting with electronic warfare payloads on medium-range reconnaissance systems. Units tested various configurations on first-person-view drones to establish strict operational limitations and capabilities, according to an Army press release.

Accelerating Acquisition and Human-Machine Teaming

Former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy noted that the current generation of enlistees is significantly more technologically savvy than previous cohorts, giving the force the luxury of deliberate transformation.

Under Secretary Obadal emphasized that the military is actively pushing immature technology directly into the hands of soldiers alongside industrial partners. This allows for rapid iteration and unfiltered user feedback that laboratories simply cannot replicate.

To capture external innovation, Army Assistant Secretary for Acquisitions, Logistics and Technology Brent Ingraham is modernizing acquisition frameworks to foster rapid prototyping and fielding. Findings are funneled directly to Lt. Gen. James P. Isenhower III, commanding general of the Combined Arms Center (CAC), who determines how force management and capability requirements must adapt.

Ultimately, military leadership stresses that autonomous systems do not replace human personnel. Instead, unmanned platforms unburden soldiers from mundane or dangerous tasks, allowing human commanders to execute complex tactical decisions.

As doctrine continues to evolve, the ability of front-line units to rapidly prototype and integrate affordable unmanned technology will define the future of U.S. land power.
