Google is directly challenging language learning platforms like Duolingo with the introduction of two new artificial intelligence-powered features within its Translate application. What began as a test in April has solidified into a strategic move for the tech giant: too offer interactive and personalized foreign language learning directly within Translate.
The first major addition is a feature called “Practice.” This system generates customized lessons based on a user’s proficiency level, catering to both beginners and advanced learners. Lessons incorporate both listening and speaking exercises, utilizing a variety of scenarios ranging from everyday interactions to more complex conversations. The AI adapts exercises progressively, taking into account the user’s stated learning goals. “Practice” is rolling out this week on both iOS and Android.
Revolutionizing Conversational Practice
Beyond structured lessons, google Translate is enhancing its live conversation capabilities. The updated feature now displays translations on-screen in real-time, allowing conversation partners to immediately read what is being said. The application can also replay the entire conversation as an audio file. Currently supporting over 70 languages - including French, Spanish, Hindi, and Korean – this functionality is initially available in the United States, India, and Mexico.
In its initial rollout, “Practice” specifically targets English speakers learning Spanish and French, and speakers of Spanish, French, or Portuguese looking to improve their English skills.
