German Climber Dies After Falling From Mount Ama Dablam in Nepal
A 57-year-old German mountaineer died after falling approximately 1,500 meters from Mount Ama Dablam in Nepal, just one day after reaching the 6,812-meter summit.
The Fall from Ama Dablam
Wolfgang Wasicek was confirmed dead on Monday, October 26, hours after his mountain guide reported him missing from Camp Three. The high-altitude camp sits at an elevation of roughly 6,200 meters on one of the Himalayan range’s most demanding peaks.
Gokul Thapa, head of the Real Himalaya expedition agency, stated that Wasicek reached the summit on Sunday alongside his personal guide, Sonam Lama. The two climbers returned to Camp Three that same evening to spend the night before starting their descent.
On Monday morning, the guide stepped away for a brief period to return equipment borrowed from other climbers. He instructed the 57-year-old German to wait inside the tent. When the guide returned moments later, Wasicek was gone.
Gokul Thapa of Real Himalaya stated that after his successful ascent to the summit, the climber spent Sunday night at the third camp, and on Monday morning, his guide found that he was missing.
Guide finds climber's body after fall
Shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, another mountain guide spotted the climber’s body at an altitude of approximately 4,600 meters. The location is far below the campsite where Wasicek had spent the previous night.
Authorities indicate the mountaineer fell from a massive height, though the exact trigger for the fall remains undetermined. A helicopter airlifted the body later that afternoon to Lukla, the gateway town for Everest region expeditions.

Thapa noted that Wasicek had previously visited Nepal in 2024 for trekking excursions. Once the autopsy concludes, the embassy will return the body to his family.
Ama Dablam records first fatality of 2026
Mount Ama Dablam rises in the Khumbu region near Everest, standing as a formidable test of technical mountaineering. Traversing its steep rock faces and exposed ridges requires advanced skills at extreme altitudes.

More than 300 climbers targeted the peak during the autumn season. Wasicek’s death marks the first fatality recorded on Ama Dablam for 2026. In October 2025, two other climbers—a 65-year-old Frenchman and a 66-year-old South Korean—died on the same mountain.
The tragedy follows the deaths of two Japanese climbers in western Nepal and adds to a severe year for high-altitude accidents across Asia. Avalanches and extreme weather have also claimed lives on Pakistan’s Broad Peak and Nepal’s Makalu.
