Michelle Alejandra Rubio-Leiva Dies After 1,000-Foot Fall
Michelle Alejandra Rubio-Leiva, a 36-year-old tourist from Miami, died after plunging more than 1,000 feet from a high-altitude trail in the Italian Dolomite mountains. The fatal fall occurred on the Forcella Pordoi trail within the Sella group, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that reaches 9,344 feet at its highest elevation.
The Fatal Fall on the Forcella Pordoi Trail
Rubio-Leiva was vacationing with family members when the accident happened. According to emergency workers cited by local media, the two women had left the trail to reach a steep, exposed spot on an upper cliff to take a picture. Rubio-Leiva slipped from the ledge and fell into the canyon below.
Her sister, who was present during the incident, alerted emergency services. The Trentino Alpine and Cave Rescue Services dispatched a specialist team alongside a rescue helicopter to the remote site. The local carabinieri stated that Rubio-Leiva’s family members were airlifted to Canazei while rescue workers spent several hours retrieving her body.
Dangers of the Italian Dolomites
The Italian Alpine Rescue unit noted that the hiking area is extremely dangerous, characterized by steep inclines, loose gravel, and falling rocks. Statistics from the rescue unit indicate that more than 80 people have died in the Dolomites so far in 2026. The Sella group site is only accessible by cable car, reaching extreme altitudes where terrain conditions can shift rapidly for visitors.
Police in Trentino announced the death late in the week after notifying next of kin.
