Jay-Z and J. Cole Support Lil Durk in New Bid for Federal Release
Jay-Z and J. Cole are backing Lil Durk’s latest attempt at pre-trial release, submitting letters to a federal judge on Tuesday urging bond as the Grammy-winning rapper awaits an August 2027 trial in Los Angeles on racketeering-related charges. The new bail proposal includes a pledge from Durk, born Durk Banks, to sign over all future royalties and earnings, alongside an offer from Sony Music Entertainment to post an appearance bond of up to $1 million.
The 34-year-old artist remains in federal custody following an acquittal in September on murder-for-hire charges linked to the August 19, 2022, fatal shooting of Saviay’a Robinson. While prosecutors previously secured convictions against co-defendants Deandre Wilson and David Lindsey for conspiracy to commit stalking, stalking, and stalking resulting in death, they filed a third superseding indictment shortly before the summer trial, adding new counts of murder in aid of racketeering and firearms possession. U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald severed those charges for a separate trial, leaving Banks detained as he faces the upcoming proceedings.
Letters to Federal Judge Michael Fitzgerald Urge Bond
The push for release involves direct appeals from two of hip-hop’s most prominent figures. In his letter to Judge Michael Fitzgerald, Jay-Z recounted meeting Banks years ago and observing his discipline, spirituality, and commitment to signing young artists from Chicago to offer them a path into a legitimate industry.
“He was kind, respectful, and focused on his career,” Jay-Z wrote, adding that Banks worked to help others escape limited options and high-risk environments.

J. Cole addressed his collaboration with Banks on the quadruple-platinum track “All My Life,” noting that he initially questioned the song’s positive message because it contrasted with his own introspective image. Cole stated that Banks persuaded him of his sincerity regarding peace and maturity. Cole also recalled visiting a juvenile detention center in Cleveland where young inmates connected deeply with Banks’ struggles and respect.
Andrea Robinson, the mother of victim Saviay’a Robinson, also submitted a letter dated September 28, 2026, stating that her family does not object to a bond being granted if the court deems it appropriate.

Legal Defense Strategy Ahead of November 4 Hearing
Defense lawyers argued in court filings that Banks has minimal incentive to flee or interfere with witnesses because the upcoming trial involves the same underlying killing and cooperating witnesses who already testified during the August and September trial that resulted in his acquittal. Counsel maintained that a rational defendant is unlikely to flee when facing evidence previously deemed insufficient for a conviction on related counts.
The defense also raised the possibility of seeking a dismissal of the remaining charge on double jeopardy grounds, suggesting that the earlier acquittal might legally bar a second trial on specific issues. Federal prosecutors are expected to oppose the new bail proposal at a hearing scheduled for November 4 in federal court in Los Angeles, maintaining previous assertions that the defendant poses a flight risk.
