Final Fantasy XIV Coming to Nintendo Switch 2: MMO Arrives on Next-Gen Console
Square Enix announced on Wednesday that Final Fantasy XIV will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first time the long-running MMORPG will be available on a Nintendo console.
The confirmation came during a Nintendo Direct presentation, where a trailer showcased gameplay footage of the title running on the upcoming hybrid system. The video highlighted character creation, combat sequences, and exploration of Eorzea, optimized for the Switch 2’s hardware capabilities.
According to Square Enix’s official statement, the port will maintain cross-platform functionality with existing PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions, allowing Switch 2 players to join the same persistent world as users on other platforms. This includes shared servers, synchronized updates, and identical content drops.
The development team emphasized that performance optimization was a central focus, with particular attention given to frame rate stability and load times during large-scale player events such as raids and territorial battles. Early testing reportedly achieved consistent 30 frames per second in docked mode and 20–25 frames per second in handheld mode under standard conditions.
No official release date was provided during the announcement, though Square Enix confirmed that a closed beta test for Switch 2 users is scheduled to begin later this year. Interested players will be able to apply through the official Final Fantasy XIV website, with selection criteria based on regional server availability and prior participation in testing phases.
The port represents a significant technical undertaking, as Final Fantasy XIV has historically required substantial system resources due to its expansive world, high-resolution assets, and complex server architecture. Adapting the game for a handheld hybrid console necessitated adjustments to texture streaming, shadow rendering, and asset compression without compromising core gameplay integrity.
Industry analysts note that the move aligns with Nintendo’s strategy to strengthen the Switch 2’s appeal to core gaming audiences, particularly those engaged with live-service and multiplayer titles. Final Fantasy XIV’s sustained player base — regularly exceeding 2.5 million monthly active users across platforms — makes it a notable addition to the system’s library.
Square Enix has not disclosed whether the Switch 2 version will support optional touchscreen controls or integrate with Nintendo Switch Online services beyond standard online multiplayer access. Further details regarding subscription requirements, input customization, and potential exclusives are expected to be revealed in the months leading up to the beta phase.
